Summer always seems like a lull in the hunting world, but I try to use the time to get a jump on things before the rush starts. I've been checking gear and trail cams while attempting to stay fit, though I can't shake the feeling I've overlooked something important, so I'm curious how everyone else is gearing up this time of year.

My preps are divided into two categories, Gear and Game. The gear side is pretty much an ongoing process. I keep my firearms in good condition with regular maintenance and range trips. I do a good bit of research on new rounds and try to test several different rounds and loads through the summer to find the best fit for different types of hunting. Right now I'm trying several different 22lr rounds in anticipation of Squirrel season.

Speaking of squirrels, I bought a new pair of binoculars and have carried them on a few woods walks checking them out. While I do think they will be put to good use this fall I am still trying to find the best carrier. Currently I am using a Leupold chest rig. I don't have any real complaints but am always looking for the next better piece of gear.

As to the game side of the equation I've already shared my first hunts will be for squirrels. I think I will take a few road trips this year. I'd like to hunt some different areas of the state. If anyone has any recommendations for some public access land please share them.
