What fun stuff was under your tree this year? I generally get the standard socks and underwear. This year I got the son-in-law a new pocket knife. He ain't from here and has never carried a knife and I am trying to change that. That is just another one of the firsts with him. I guided him through his first oil change and brake job this fall. He was raised on Jiffy Lube and Pep Boys. I was raised on Craftsman and Snap-on.

I gifted a "new" shooter a gun cleaning kit along with some consumables like patches, swabs and cleaning chemicals. I also spent about four hours guiding her through the cleaning process. I took a lot of time explaining why we clean before we started how we clean. We went over the pros and cons of various types of gear like one piece versus sectional cleaning rods and coated steel versus brass versus aluminum rods. At every turning point I tried to make sure she understood which was my personal preference and which was sound protocol established by industry experts. Before we were finished we had cleaned a Taurus revolver, a Hi Point semi and a Revelation 16 gauge shotgun.

I gave my grandson his first rifle. I bought him a Savage Rascal. His sister got one on her 5th Christmas. I bought his three days before he was born but will hold it for him until he is capable of shouldering it. I like the Savage better than the Cricket type "first" guns. The Savage cocks on opening rather than pulling a cocking knob. It is easier for small hands to do and much easier to put it on safe rather than trying to ease the knob forward again.

So, What fun stuff was under you tree? Fishing gear, hunting gear, shooting gear? Tell us about it so we can share in the Christmas cheer!
