Road Trip with a Gun

Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. It adds a lot of hassle to the journey. Avoiding NY adds a ridiculous amount of drive time, and I’m not sure if it’s worth it. I’ve heard conflicting things about transporting firearms through different states, and I’m curious if anyone else has dealt with this. What routes did you take, and how did you manage the firearm situation? I’m open to suggestions, even if it doesn’t have to be perfect.

I take I-90 through PA to avoid NY, adds a couple hours but worth it. Gun stays unloaded in a trunk case, ammo separate for FOPA. I got a small safe bolted in my SUV.

The biggest concern here is how strict New York can be. Even if you're just passing through, one small mistake with transport could turn into a headache
