I can see how the discussion went long! To start with there has to be a separation of types of ammo, I.e. rimfire, center-fire rifle, center-fire handgun, shotgun etc. After that it needs further breakdown by usage. Range/practice ammo, self defense ammo, hunting ammo are all different and while Winchester white box or Monarch might be okay for a day at the range I don't want either in my carry weapons. Yeah, that question opens a big can of worms.
I lean to SK and Lapua for hunting and target rimfire and whatever is cheapest for plinking and practice. Remington Core-Lokt has proven to be a dependable and consistent performer in field at less than 200 yards but I don't think I would stake a guided elk or moose hunt on a box. Winchester AA reigns on the skeet range but falls short in the field. Yeah this is a bit of a loaded question.
Let me ask you a question; what were you hunting when the question was first asked?
