Are thread protectors important?

Do I need a thread protector, or can I just skip it to keep things lighter?
It's always a good idea to keep a thread protector on. An accidental bump can damage threads and we all know our firearms are subject to bumps and bruises, even those that live most of their life in a safe. Think about all the opportunities to bump or bang a barrel end; moving one into or out of the safe, laying one done , moving or removing from the truck. All are times when your threaded end could come into contact with another hard surface,

Straightening threads from a bump isn't too hard if you have a thread file handy. Just choose the correct TPI side and starting in an undamaged area engage the threads with the file and pushing away from you follow the threads. Take small cuts and work SLOWLY.

I've seen guys hit their muzzle against a safe shelf or tailgate more times than I can count. Sure, thread files can be a lifesaver if the damage isn’t too bad but prevention is always gonna be easier and cheaper than dealing with repairs. A thread protector might seem like an unnecessary item until that one time you really need it and it’s not around. Appreciate you sharing the repair process. That’s some valuable info for folks to have in their toolkit.
